How we count
Every figure on this site can be reproduced from a public file. This page says how, and is as honest about the limitations as about the findings.
The source
The Motor Fuel Price (Open Data) Regulations 2025 came into force on 2 February 2026. Every filling station in the United Kingdom must report the price of each fuel grade, and must do so within 30 minutes of a change taking effect at the pump. The data is published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and is free to reuse under the Open Government Licence.
This snapshot was taken on 2026-09-10 and covers 8,085 open forecourts.
Grades
Prices are pence per litre. Grades are named as the regulations name them: E10 is standard unleaded, E5 is super unleaded, B7 is diesel. Two low-carbon grades appear rarely and are reported separately.

What we exclude
- Forecourts flagged as permanently closed.
- Prices outside 50p to 400p a litre, as implausible. These are recorded and counted rather than discarded silently, and none appeared in this snapshot.
- Brands with fewer than five forecourts are left out of the league table, rather than given an average drawn from one site.
- Postcode areas with fewer than three forecourts are left out of the area tables.
Known limitations of the source
- Areas are grouped by postcode district, not by the town field. The town field in the source is unreliable: some records carry a town that does not match their postcode.
- Brand names are spelt inconsistently and are matched case-insensitively. Sites run by a distributor under a major's branding are counted separately from that major.
- Some forecourts report far less often than the rules require. A price here is the last one the retailer reported, which in a small number of cases is weeks old. Remote and island forecourts are the most affected.
- This is a single snapshot. Figures that need history, such as how quickly a retailer passes on a wholesale fall, will follow as it accumulates.
