Drivers in Birmingham can pay 25.3p a litre more for petrol at one ordinary forecourt than at another in the same city, according to an analysis of the government's own fuel price data by British Fuel Prices. On a 55-litre tank that is £13.92.

The cheapest of Birmingham's 81 forecourts in the analysis, Witton Road (B6), charges 167.6p for unleaded. The dearest, the BP-branded Clock Service Station (B36), charges 192.9p.

The analysis leaves out motorway services, which charge a premium everywhere, and Costco, which sells only to members, so every comparison is between forecourts any driver can use on an ordinary road.

Where the gaps are widest

Of the 210 towns with eight or more forecourts, 25 have a gap of 15p a litre or more between their cheapest and dearest. In a typical town the gap is 8p, still £4.40 a tank.

Sam Allcock, editor of British Fuel Prices, said: "Prices have gone up every day for a fortnight, but where you fill up still matters more than when. In Birmingham you can save 25p a litre without leaving the city or joining a club. Most people use the forecourt on their route and never find that out."

Every town has its own page, cheapest first, at britishfuelprices.co.uk/areas.
